Chapter 24

Daphne leaned her head on the back of a chair, waiting for Elizabeth to return. Her eyes drooped and she barely kept her head upright, which explained why she rested on a chair. She needed it. Otherwise, she was going to collapse upon the floor.

Elizabeth needed to use the bathroom, blaming the five glasses of fruit punch she drank while the night raged on. That was ten minutes ago and she still hadn’t returned. Daphne knew that her friend was somewhere amidst the partygoers, chatting them up.

One more drink and they’d leave. Elizabeth’s promise. Daphne knew better than to believe her friend when she said that they would leave a party early. This was Elizabeth Evanston, of all people. She couldn’t leave early since that meant missing out on a night’s worth of gossip.

“Daphne.” A voice called out to her. She blinked a few times, but didn’t lift up her head.

The person pulled up a chair and sat next to her. Feeling a hand on her shoulder, she made a noise and sat up.

John Fitzsimmons.

“You look exhausted.”

“That’s because I am. I’m trying to leave, but I’m waiting on Elizabeth.”

“She’s in the next room talking with a few business owners,” he revealed. He tilted his head, amused by the way Daphne blanked out while he spoke. “You really need to get to bed soon, don’t you?”

“I thought I already made that clear.” Daphne closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. “What happened to your girlfriend?”

“My what?”

“Your girlfriend! The one who hauled you away earlier.”

“She’s not my girlfriend. Who told you that she was?”

“Rebecca did.” Daphne shrugged. “She made a big deal about it in the middle of the farmer’s market. I didn’t ask and I didn’t care, but she made it her mission to let me know what was going on.”

“She’s a–” John stopped himself. Instead, he pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m sorry. I’ll talk to her about this later.”

“Please, don’t. I don’t want any issues with you or your family anymore.”

Her eyes fluttered open and she saw the way he looked at her. He held a lot of tenderness in his gaze. The drowsiness made her imagine things, though. She didn’t linger on it.

“Do you want to go home?”

“I do. I need to. I won’t be able to last much longer.” Daphne stood up with his help. He linked her arm through his. “I’m not like Lizzy. She could spend the whole night talking to everyone. I can’t.”

“I know. You’re special in your own way. There’s no need to compare yourself to her.”

“I love her, though.” Daphne pulled her arm away. Her abrupt movement made John furrow his brows at her. “Hold on. Why are you being so nice to me?”

“Are you serious, Daphne? I want to take you home. There’s nothing nefarious behind it.”

“But… but you keep trying to take me out on a date. What if those are your intentions?”

Stifling his grin, John shook his head and offered his hand again. “I promise you that I won’t do anything you don’t want done.
